“Another October Cafe”

Sweater-vest stares
while Headphones fiddles with untrimmed nails
carefully observing
snow falls and melts
as nothing ever changes
newest, more expensive toys
we’re told to want
and blindly we feed
the system we fight
the Drummer in ripped jeans
aware of observation
increases pace and sucks in
his winter fat
as old locals settle
from the disturbance of
every new occupant
change is unwelcome
while greeted by dentured smiles
the Drummer sighs
having been forgotten
and tries to draw attention
but he knows
he is as meaningless as the rest
as those he seeks to escape
yet, fear will always keep him
wrapped in yesterday’s clothes
and tomorrow’s hopes
