“Beyond Rationale”

When I was young
my Grandmother cautioned
beware of he who has everything
moreso, should he offer
to share kindness with you

For her faults, she was wise
though only on occasion
and I fear I have fallen
for the oldest of tricks

How simple we are
knowing our vices, and daring
to think ourselves clever
denying the self
supplanted by others

More cunning still,
the way we employ deceit
offering objects of desire
intended to turn favor

Yet for all our guile, we cannot imagine
that they know our secrets,
the needs we dare not voice
and how best to tug
at the strings which hold us together

Grandma, it seems, was right
for logic will always fail
when faced with matters
of human emotion
