“Cavalier”

We laughed into silos
and picked briers from our laces
holding thistle, triumphant
in the relentless cold

We watched the stars fall
from tire-top perch
as green ribbons stained the sky
and everything was still

We stripped away insignificance
became nothing, together
in dark mirrors
and smoke-filled rooms

We were immortal
for a moment
because we believed
