“Dr. Trauer Speaks”

muggy afternoon
side effect of
some tropical storm
locals call it
hurricane season
year after year
it’s the same
this far from the coast
it pours for days
rain floods the tobacco fields
but otherwise we wouldn’t notice
just an excuse to frown at puddles
we once splashed in
water cold, socks wet
scolding from mother
too busy counting her wrinkles
youth forgotten, long ago
my hands, aging now
mind heavy with useless fears
reminiscing for a smile
distraction from responsibility
disappointment
be not so quick
to abandon childhood
for in time, it will abandon you
