“The Mighty Have Fallen”

August in North Carolina
saw a Toyota today
with a bumper sticker
“local as it gets”
which was funny until I realized
no one saw the irony

Later, I overheard at restaurant
waitress, squinty eyes, brown hair
“I heard they’re making these tea leaves now
that are naturally sweet.
It’s way better for you.”
So you don’t have to add sugar
to your gene-spliced cup of diabetes
This apparently makes it healthy

I thought

This must be
what going mad feels like
solitude in a crowded room
watching them
drooling, fucking, repeating
any slogan they’ve heard before

One after another
following the herd
without questioning navigator
like lemmings, drowning
from short-sightedness
kill the enemy, obey
take your food-pellet and your ID number
Trust, don’t try. The future is here.

We were once such a proud race
perhaps too intelligent
having thusly engineered
our own downfall
obedience to a flawed system
sacrifice of self-worth
of idea
for the sake of convenience
processed humans
consuming processed products
each wanting to believe
in a processed form of truth

we call this “advanced civilization”

  1. I have to tell you I love your writing. Not only the way you write but what you have to say. Just dealing with this last night in a conversation about stevia. It’s natural or it comes from something natural and then processed to be something completely different…. I am so on board with you and wonder how the lemmings can be so blind. Anyway, great writing. Have a good one!

    1. Thank you so much! It’s amazing what people will believe is good for them, just because someone said so. No one bothers asking questions, and that’s detrimental to self-preservation. It’s good to hear three are like minds out there, and I am quite pleased that you enjoyed the read. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and for having thoughts of your own!

  2. I am truly in love with your writing. The way you are so brief yet conclusive is amazing. I believe the lemming behavior within the human race comes from the media these days. We are being served with thoroughly cooked and well garnished opinions…..and REPEATEDLY…… I don’t know how we are supposed to deal with this…..great writing

    1. Thank you! I think you’re absolutely correct, behaviors and ideas are reinforced through representation in media, and the general populace treats it as gospel. Thank you so much for your kind thoughts, I am delighted to know that this was not only understood, but even enjoyed.

  3. Hullo, thismadmuse, what can I say, But that your poetry, from the camp of one a world away from mine own race, could so perfectly capture the mood of mine own mind. For Scotland, in today’s rhythm, is but poison to the foe, and in that, lie’s the rat in the trap.
