“Hardly Humble (Beginnings)”

I am uncertain how
to appear less approachable
as my eyes are fixed
upon notebook, pencil
moves with liquid ease
earbuds in, cord exposed
and still, he’s talking to me
don’t look, don’t respond
surely he’ll go away
he’s now tapping my shoulder
and I almost smile at the irony
we’re likely both wondering
how the other could be so dense
“he must see I’m busy”
“she must see me standing here”
“clearly, resolution is left to me”
tap-tap, tap-tap
“clearly resolution is left to me”
earbuds out

humans fail at communication
because of self-importance
this is why we always begin
with “I”
